Directions to Starting Line (Forest City High School)

From Downtown Scranton (an approximately 40-minute drive by car)

Leave Downtown by going north on Mulberry Street (gas stations on left as you leave Downtown).

Merge straight onto Scranton Expressway and follow Expressway 3.1 miles to Y in road, then bear right towards “Business Route 6 East/Dickson City”.

Follow Business Route 6 East approximately 11.8 miles all the way to Main Street in Carbondale.

While traveling on Business Route 6 East you will pass numerous shopping malls, restaurants, car dealerships, etc… As you get close to Main Street in Carbondale you will pass Carbondale High School and then a Shopping Center and Burger King on your left.

Make a left turn at the traffic light onto Main Street (watch for detours by local police).

Travel approximately ½ mile through Carbondale on Main Street.

Then make a left at the traffic light (T-Intersection near Zazzerra’s and YMCA).

Travel a very short distance around a turn and make a left onto Route 171 North.

Follow Route 171 North approximately six miles (through Simpson and Vandling) to Main Street in Forest City.

Once on Main Street in Forest City look for signs for “Bus Route” and for 247 South (Dundaff Street).

Make a left onto Dundaff Street (247 S) and go uphill (or follow directions by local police).

Travel two blocks uphill and make a left onto Hudson Street then follow signs to Forest City School.

Upon arriving at the school, drivers will be directed to a runners’ drop off point and then redirected either off school grounds or to the main parking area (near soccer field). Follow the directions of police officers.
Important Notes...

If traveling on Interstate 81 take exit 191A (Business Route 6 East - Dickson City) and follow the directions described above.

Due to very limited parking at the start area athletes are strongly encouraged to use the free bus transportation provided beginning at 5:30 a.m. from Courthouse Square in Downtown Scranton.

If you must drive to the start please arrive before 7:00 a.m. (or risk being delayed by closed roads).

If you drive to Forest City and stay to watch the start you WILL NOT be allowed to immediately leave Forest City on the route you entered. In fact, Route 171 South to Carbondale will be closed for approximately one hour after the starting gun.

An alternate route out of Forest City involves driving a considerable distance on Route 247 South to Route 106 East to Business Route 6 West to the Scranton Expressway (11 S) to Downtown Scranton. Details about this alternate route can be found below.

Viewpoint # 1 – Main Street, City of Carbondale

Distance from Downtown Scranton – approximately 15 miles

Point in the Race – 7.7 mile mark

Expected Arrival Time by First Runners at this Viewpoint – 8:40 a.m.

Leave Downtown Scranton going north on Mulberry St and merge straight onto Expressway.

Take the Scranton Expressway approximately 3.1 miles.

At Y in road bear right onto Business Route 6 East towards Dickson City.

Pass the Viewmont Mall on Bus. Rt. 6 East.

Drive through many traffic lights and pass numerous shopping areas on Bus. Rt. 6.

As you near Carbondale (about 13 miles from Downtown Scranton) stay on Bus. Route 6 East.

Pass Carbondale High School on your left (14.4 miles from Downtown Scranton)

When you see the shopping center with the Burger King on your left (14.7 miles from Downtown) you are just a two-block walk from Viewpoint # 1 on Main Street in Carbondale.

NOTE: Viewpoint # 1 may also be accessed by taking Interstate 81 to Exit 191 A and then following Business Route 6 East as described above.

Directions from Viewpoint # 1 to Viewpoint # 2:

Reverse direction and travel on Business Route 6 West.
Travel 5.9 miles.
Pass the former Sugerman’s Shopping Plaza on left
At traffic light just past Sugerman’s, make a left onto Betty Street (by Monroe Muffler)
Travel ½ mile (you’ll pass Amoco Gas Station/Convenient Mart on left).
At T-Intersection by cemetery (6.7 miles from Viewpoint #1) make a left toward Jermyn.
Drive 3/10ths of one mile and bear right onto Kennedy Dr. (by small grassy island with Rt. 6 sign).
Travel 1.1 miles to bottom of hill.
At bottom of hill, make a right turn onto Main Avenue (expect some traffic congestion here).
Follow Main Ave. 1.1 miles to stop sign at corner of Main Ave. & Bridge St. (see runners on left!)
Either turn right on Bridge St. and look for place to park OR…
OR continue driving 1/10th of a mile on Main Avenue to Walnut St (restaurant on your right at the corner of Main and Walnut). Turn right onto Walnut St. to find additional parking.

DO NOT PARK ON MAIN STREET AT ANYTIME!!! DO NOT TURN LEFT ONTO COURSE!

To travel to the finish, continue in the same direction on Main Ave. After driving 6/10th’s of one mile on Main you’ll see the runners again on your left at the traffic light at Keystone Ave. intersection (17.49-mile mark). Continue through light on Main until you come to light by Mid Valley Hospital. Turn left at light and continue on Main Ave. (you’ll pass Fiorelli’s on your left a short time later). Continue on Main until you see the big anchor (yes, anchor) near the light on W. Lackawanna Ave. (you’ll see runners on left again here – 20.08-mile mark). Turn right at light (W. Lackawanna Ave.) and travel uphill 6/10th’s of one mile. At top of very steep hill, make a right and drive ½ mile (watch for signs for Business Route 6). Bear left and follow signs for Bus. Route 6 West. Follow Bus. Route 6 West approximately 2.9 miles (pass numerous shopping areas) and you’ll see signs for “Scranton Expressway/Route 11 South”. Follow expressway into Downtown Scranton. You’ll enter downtown on Mulberry Street.

Directions to Local Hotels from Steamtown Marathon Race Expo

CLARKS SUMMIT HOTELS (Ramada Inn, Inn at Nichols Village, Comfort Inn/Clarks Summit, Hampton Inn/Clarks Summit, EconoLodge) - Upon leaving school grounds, turn right and drive to first traffic light. Turn right onto ramp to Route 11 North (Scranton Expressway). Drive approximately 2.8 miles on Route 11 North. At Y intersection, bear to the left to stay onto Route 11 North. Follow Route 11 North about 2.2 miles and you will see the hotels on your left and right. Comfort Inn, EconoLodge and Inn at Nichols Village are on your left. Ramada Inn and Hampton Inn are on your right.
MONTAGE MOUNTAIN HOTELS (Econo Lodge, Courtyard by Marriott, Hampton Inn/Montage, Comfort Suites, TownePlace Suites and Rodeway Inn). - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden St. (Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into middle lane. Drive one block and turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Follow signs for Route 81 South. Take I-81 South to Exits 182B and 182A (Davis Street and Montage Mountain Road).
ECONO LODGE – Take Exit 182B. At end of exit ramp, turn right and then make your first right turn (by the gas stations). Follow winding road about ½ mile. Just past post office you’ll see Econo Lodge.
RODEWAY INN – Take Exit 182B. At end of exit ramp, turn right. Travel down the hill about 6/10th of a mile. Turn left at light (Birney Ave/Rt. 11 South.) Drive just over one mile. Hotel on right.
HAMPTON INN & COMFORT SUITES – Take Exit 182A. At end of exit ramp turn right. Cross back over I-81 and drive straight. At entrance to office park, turn left and you’ll see the hotels.
COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT – Take Exit 182A. At end of exit ramp turn right and stay in right lane. Cross back over I-81. Near entrance to office park, bear RIGHT onto Montage Mountain Road. Follow Montage Mountain Road to first left. Turn left and go up hill a short distance. Hotel will be on your right.
TOWNEPLACE SUITES – Take Exit 182A. At end of exit ramp turn right and stay in right lane. Cross back over I-81. Near entrance to office park, bear RIGHT onto Montage Mountain Road. Follow Montage Mountain Road to first left. Turn left and go up to traffic light by Shoppes at Montage and Cinemark Theater Complex. Turn right and then turn right again to access hotel.
BUSINESS ROUTE 6/VIEWMONT MALL HOTELS (Days Inn, Residence Inn, Fairfield Inn, Holiday Inn Express) - Upon leaving school grounds, turn right and drive to first traffic light. Turn right onto ramp to Route 11 North (Scranton Expressway). Drive approximately 2.8 miles on Route 11 North. At Y intersection, stay to right and follow signs to Business Route 6 East.
FAIRFIELD INN & RESIDENCE INN – At Y, stay to right and follow Business Route 6 East about ¼ mile to entrance to Viewmont Mall (on right). Turn right into the Viewmont Mall. Turn right on mall access road. Follow road all the way around to the back of the mall. Make right turn at major intersection. Fairfield Inn and Residence Inn will be on right near several major retailers.
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS - At Y, stay to right and follow Business Route 6 East past the main entrance to the Viewmont Mall. At next traffic light, turn right and drive to the bottom of the hill. Turn left and drive to hotel (on right).
DAYS INN – At Y, stay to right and follow Business Route 6 East past the entrance to the Viewmont Mall. Drive several miles on Business Route 6 East (a major retail thoroughfare). Keep looking to your right and eventually you will see the Days Inn.
DICKSON CITY MICROTEL - Upon leaving school grounds, turn right and drive to first traffic light. Turn right onto ramp to Route 11 North (Scranton Expressway). Drive approximately 2.8 miles on Route 11 North. At Y intersection, stay to right and follow signs to Business Route 6 East. Just after bearing right to follow Business Rt. 6 East, follow the signs for I-81 SOUTH. Follow I-81 South to Exit 190 (Main Ave). At end of exit ramp, turn right onto Main Ave. Drive approximately ¼ mile. Hotel will be on your right.
DOWNTOWN SCRANTON HOTELS (Red Carpet Inn, Hilton, and Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel) - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street (Redner’s on left).
RED CARPET INN – Follow W. Linden Street to second traffic light (Franklin Avenue). Turn left onto Franklin Avenue. You will see hotel on your right.
HILTON - Follow West Linden Street to the 4th light (Wyoming Avenue). Turn right and follow Wyoming Avenue two blocks. Turn left onto Lackawanna Avenue (at T-intersection by shopping mall). Follow Lackawanna Avenue two blocks to Adams Avenue. Turn left onto Adams Avenue. Hotel will be on your right.
RADISSON AT LACKAWANNA STATION HOTEL – Follow West Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into right lane. Drive one block to Spruce Street. Proceed straight through intersection. Hotel will be on your immediate left.
CLARION INN SCRANTON - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street (Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into left lane. Drive one block on Jefferson Avenue and then turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Stay in left lane (Route 307 South) and drive towards neighborhood. Go straight through light and pass Krispy Kreme Doughnuts on your left. Drive straight (you’re on Moosic Street/Route 307 South) up the hill through the residential/commercial neighborhood. At second traffic light past Krispy Kreme turn right (Meadow Ave,) Clarion is two blocks up on your left.
DAYS INN DUNMORE - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street (Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into middle lane. Drive one block and turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Follow signs for I-81 NORTH. Take Exit 188 (347 Throop/Dunmore). Stay in right lane. Travel short distance. Hotel is on right near Price Chopper and behind Wendy’s.
HOLIDAY INN SCRANTON EAST: DUNMORE - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street (Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into middle lane. Drive one block and turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Follow signs for I-81 NORTH. Take I-81 North to exit 186 (Drinker St.). Turn right at stop sign. Drive about 1/2 mile and make left onto Tigue St. The Holiday Inn Scranton East - Dunmore will be on your right.
SLEEP INN DUNMORE - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street (Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into middle lane. Drive one block and turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Follow signs for I-81 NORTH. Take Exit 188 (347 Throop/Dunmore). Stay in right lane. Make immediate right (Monahan Ave). Travel short distance. Hotel will be on your right.
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS at WILKES-BARRE SCRANTON AIRPORT - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street (Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into middle lane. Drive one block and turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Follow signs for Route 81 South. Take I-81 South to Exit 178A. Upon taking exit follow the road that takes you to airport. At entrance to airport, turn RIGHT. Hotel is a short distance on your right.
FAIRFIELD INN & SUITES WILKES-BARRE - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street (Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into middle lane. Drive one block and turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Follow signs for Route 81 South. Take I-81 South to Exit 170B. Once off exit, follow Expressway to very first exit. Take first exit and come around exit loop. At end of loop turn right. Drive straight a short distance on busy commercial roadway. Hotel will be on your right.
AMERICAS BEST VALUE INN (PITTSTON) - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into middle lane. Drive one block and turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Follow signs for Route 81 South. Take I-81 South to Exit 175. Follow the signs to Dupont, not Pittston. Hotel is located immediately off exit ramp.
WOODLANDS, EXTENDED STAY DELUXE & HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS (WILKES-BARRE AREA) - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street (Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into middle lane. Drive one block and turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Follow signs for Route 81 South. Take I-81 South to Exit 170 B. Once off exit, follow Expressway to very first exit. Take first exit and come around exit loop. At end of loop go straight to light and turn left. Hotels will be on your right.
BEST WESTERN EAST MOUNTAIN INN (WILKES BARRE AREA) - Upon leaving school grounds turn right at the traffic light. Continue straight to third light and make a left onto W. Linden Street (Redner’s on left). Stay straight on W. Linden Street to the 7th light (Jefferson Avenue). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and get into middle lane. Drive one block and turn left at traffic light just before the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel. Follow signs for Route 81 South. Take I-81 South to Exit170 A (Bear Creek). At end of exit ramp follow road about ¼ mile. Hotel will be on your left.

Buses run from 5:30 a.m. to 6:45 a.m.
FROM DUNMORE HOTELS (Sleep Inn, Days Inn, Holiday Inn) and points north

Follow I-81 South to Exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway).

Once on Expressway get into left lane.

Follow Expressway in left lane about 1.3 miles (you’ll see signs for Mall at Steamtown along the way).

At traffic light at entrance to Downtown Scranton turn left onto Jefferson Avenue.

Follow Jefferson Avenue (becomes Lackawanna Avenue) three blocks to Wyoming Ave. Turn right. Drive one block on Wyoming Ave. to Spruce St.
FROM POINTS SOUTH OF SCRANTON: i.e. Montage Mountain hotels (Hampton Inn, Comfort Suites, Courtyard by Marriott, Townplace Suites, Econolodge) and Pittston and Wilkes-Barre hotels

Follow I-81 North to Exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway). Note: exit is on left side of highway.

Take Exit 185 and get in left lane. Follow Expressway in left lane about 1.3 miles (you’ll see signs for Mall at Steamtown along the way).

At traffic light at entrance to Downtown Scranton, turn left onto Jefferson Avenue.

Follow Jefferson Avenue (becomes Lackawanna Avenue) three blocks to Wyoming Ave. Turn right. Drive one block on Wyoming Ave, to Spruce St.
FROM CLARKS SUMMIT HOTELS (Inn at Nichols Village, Ramada Inn, Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn, Econolodge)

From Clarks Summit, follow Rt. 11 South all the way to Downtown Scranton. Rt. 11 South will become Scranton Expressway as you leave Clarks Summit.

Enter Downtown Scranton on Mulberry Street.

Upon entering Downtown on Mulberry St., continue straight for three blocks to Wyoming Avenue.

Turn right onto Wyoming Avenue.

Follow Wyoming Avenue two blocks to Spruce Street.
FROM DICKSON CITY HOTELS (Fairfield Inn, Residence Inn)

From Fairfield and Residence Inn, use Viewmont Mall access roads and leave Mall area at main entrance/exit.

Turn left at light when leaving Mall property and look for signs for Route 11 South.

Follow Signs for Route 11 South (Scranton Expressway).

Follow Route 11 South/Scranton Expressway about 2.8 miles to entrance to Downtown Scranton at Mulberry St. (Expressway becomes Mulberry Street).

Upon entering Downtown on Mulberry St., continue straight for three blocks to Wyoming Avenue.

Turn right onto Wyoming Avenue.

Follow Wyoming Avenue three blocks to Lackawanna Avenue.

Turn left on Lackawanna. Drive one block to bus pick-up. From Dickson City Microtel – turn left out of parking lot onto Main Ave. Travel a short distance and turn left to get onto I-81 South.

Follow I-81 South to Exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway).

Once on Expressway get into left lane.

Follow Expressway in left lane about 1.3 miles (you’ll see signs for Mall at Steamtown along the way). At traffic light at entrance to Downtown Scranton turn left onto Jefferson Avenue.

Follow Jefferson Avenue (becomes Lackawanna Avenue) three blocks to Wyoming Ave. Turn right. Drive one block on Wyoming Ave. to Spruce St.

Directions to Steamtown Marathon Race Expo

Scranton High School is located at 63 Mike Munchak Way, near Providence Rd. adjacent to the Scranton Memorial Stadium and just a few blocks outside of Downtown.
If traveling from points north, take I-81 South to Exit 191B (Scranton Expressway). At bottom of exit ramp, turn right onto expressway (Rt. 11 South). Follow expressway approximately 2.7 miles and take 7th Avenue/Providence Rd. exit. At end of exit ramp, turn left at light. Drive 1/4 mile. School is on left.
If traveling from points south, take I-81 North to Exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway). Note: Exit is on left side of highway. Follow expressway just over one mile to Downtown Scranton. Upon entering Downtown, bear right onto Jefferson Ave. Take Jefferson Ave. two blocks to Mulberry St. Make left on Mulberry St. and drive six blocks through Downtown. Leave Downtown on expressway. Travel 1/10th mile and take very first exit (7th Avenue/ Providence Road). Turn right at bottom of exit ramp. School is on left.
If traveling from NY/NJ metro area, follow 380 North to I-81 North. Take I-81 North to exit 191B (Scranton Expressway). At bottom of exit ramp, turn right onto expressway (RT.11 South). Follow expressway approximately 2.7 miles and take 7th Ave. /Providence Rd. exit. At end of exit ramp, turn left at light. Drive 1/4 mile. School is on left.

Escape Route Out of Forest City to Viewpoint # 1

To Viewpoint # 1

Leave school grounds via Hudson Street (most likely the street you drove in on).

At Dundaff Street (247 SOUTH), make a left and go up the BIG HILL.

Follow 247 South/Dundaff Street (winding country road) about 2.9 miles.

Then, at intersection, make a left turn to stay on 247 South. Keep following signs for 247 South!

Follow 247 South about 1.1 miles and make a right at the stop sign by the lake. Stay on 247 South.

Drive about 1.3 miles and make a left at the stop sign to stay on 247 South.

Drive about 3 miles. At intersection with the stop sign/blinking traffic signal, turn LEFT onto Route 106 EAST.

Stay on Route 106 EAST all the way to the City of Carbondale. At about 4.8 miles on Route 106 EAST you will enter Downtown Carbondale and will begin to see the runners on Main Street one block to your left. DO NOT TURN LEFT TOWARDS THE RUNNERS!

Continue straight a few more blocks until you come to the T-intersection (2nd stop sign in Carbondale).

Viewpoint #1 is just one block to your left, BUT, turn RIGHT at the stop sign.

Drive about ¼ mile and you will see a shopping center on your right. Find a place to park and walk back to Viewpoint #1.
