The Debacle at The Chafitz Arena
August 22nd, 2009

On Saturday August 22, 2009 professional boxing returned to the Gateway City as Rumbletime Promotions hosted ‘It’s On’ at The Chafitz Arena on the campus of St. Louis University. It was supposed to be the triumphant return of Deandre ‘The Bull’ Lattimore and boxing to St. Louis, but what transpired was an absolute embarrassment to the media, fans and most importantly the powers that be in the sport of boxing! There were many things that took place tonight that didn’t sit well with me. First of all, the event started an hour and a half late. This was probably done on purpose to allow more spectators to get in to the event. By my estimation, there were only 700 people in attendance. The Media (the few of us that were there) and fans were subjected to delay after delay for bizarre reasons such as a late arriving ambulance and a late arriving commissioner. The Ring Announcer for the evening must have had better things to do such as stand outside and smoke a cigarette, instead of being in ring center in time to introduce the fighters for the night’s first bout. Also, during several of the key bouts, this man was actually ‘cheer-leading,’ encouraging the crowd to get excited and make some noise. This was extremely unprofessional behavior! The ‘powers that be’ for some retarded reason decided to have an intermission at 10:15. The announcement was that it was to be a ten minute intermission. No surprise to me, the intermission wound up being about thirty-five minutes. During the intermission came yet another weird occurrence. The National Anthem was not sung at the start of the event (like anyone with reasonable intelligence would have done), but rather somewhere around 10:25 pm!!! With people yawning and probably nodding off to sleep, the feature attraction commenced around 11:50 pm. It featured Deandre ‘The Bull’ Lattimore against Sammy Spakman. Despite a record of 21-19, the thirty-nine year old Sparkman gave Lattimore an extremely spirited fight. Lattimore looked sluggish, was constantly off balance and did not seem to have any snap to his punches. Sparkman was able to hurt Lattimore several times, consistently beat him to the punch and seemed to carry the fight. Going the full ten rounds, the fight wound up going to the judges scorecards. Perhaps it was because the fight took place in Lattimore’s hometown, perhaps it was due to the fact that the event ended well past midnight or perhaps it was the fact that the judges were blind and stupid, Lattimore wound up winning by oddly large margins (one judge had him winning 99-91). I have no clue what fight this person was watching.

The Good Things

Despite the foolishness that everyone was subjected to, there were several good things that did take place. Number One, was the amateur exhibition bout, which was the first bout on the undercard. Aaron Thomas and Kent Cruz provided a spirited bout, showing solid skills. Skyler Thompson and Ryan Davis provided a solid six-round middle weight fight with great back and fourth action. Davis winning by Unanimous Decision. The Third bout of the evening, featured one of the main reasons why I was reporting at his event. It was a fight featuring women, Mayela Perez versus one of the prettiest, toughest and most talented fighters in the sport, in Hollie ‘Hot Stuff’ Dunaway. This bout proved to be a spirited one as well as Perez pressured Dunaway from rounds two through five landing good body shots and stiff right hands. Dunaway won the fight by working behind a good left jab, solid counter-punching and strong right hands. Hollie even took the opportunity to taunt her opponent in round five by standing against the ropes and allowing Perez to fire hooks at her body. Dunaway responded by rotating her torso from side to side and smiling to the crowd! Few, if any of those punches landed. Ryan Coyne ‘The Irish Outlaw’ proved too much for Larry Jarrett, as he pummeled his opponent from the opening bell of the six round cruiserweight fight. Jarrett had his nose broken in round three by a Coyne uppercut, but received more punishment from there. The Co-feature of the main event was another solid bout pitting Alex ‘The Technician’ Bunema against Willie Lee. Lee proved to be a tough test against Bunema, outworking him over the duration of the ten round fight, for the NABF Light Middleweight title fight. Bunema however landed the harder more effective shots and had a good showing, but it wasn’t enough as Willie Lee won the NABF Lt. Middleweight title by a Split Decision.

In Conclusion

One of the main objectives of this event, was to capture the attention of the boxing world, thereby leading to more cards and televised events at the big venues in and around St. Louis. I must say that Rumble Time Promotions (the host promoter) failed miserably to do so! To make St. Louis an attractive city to hold major fights and boxing events, Rumble Time needs to do several things. 1. The events must be better organized, with all personnel performing and acting in a ‘professional manner’ (no cheerleading ring announcers, all athletic commission officials showing up on time, etc.). 2. Every attempt must be made to have more interesting, if not competitive matches. It’s time to select better opponents for Danny Williams, fighters that are capable of going the full eight or ten rounds and provide a moving target. A Good, Young Lightweight, or a Solid Young veteran. The recently terminated Cab Drivers and Unemployed Stockbrokers that he has been knocking out have to go! 3. With a better effort on the part of the State Athletic Commission and The Host Promoter, great attempts should be made to have the event televised. I like most avid boxing fans, want to see HBO, Showtime and ESPN hold events here in St. Louis, but Rumbletime Promotions needs to rethink their strategy in promoting cards.

It’s going to be a LONG season!
September 13th, 2009

Folks,

The St. Louis Rams entered the 2009 season with the anticipation of turning things around, in terms of going from Five wins in TWO seasons, to a franchise that is once again respectable. They drafted a new Offensive Tackle Jason Smith, with the hopes that he would succeed future Hall-of-Fame Inductee Orlando Pace. Oddly, Smith starts the season at Right Tackle, instead of Left Tackle where he excelled in college. Middle Linebacker James Laurinitis was drafted with the assumption that he would be that he would fill the void, giving this team something that is has lacked since 2001, a Middle Linebacker that would be a Solid Tackler and Defender against the run & pass and a leader on defense. Many of the veterans from last year, were replaced with rookies and young players with little NFL experience. Last but not least, a new Head Coach and coaching staff was hired and put in place, with the hopes of bringing a new attitude to a stagnant team. After watching most of the Rams season opener in Seattle (I switched it off early in the third quarter), I have a feeling that it’s going to be a LONG, LONG season. Once again, the Rams were humiliated by the Seahawks at Quest field by a score of 28-0, extending their losing streak to 11 in the NFC West! Penalties were not the only problem with this team on day one, just one of the reasons why Rams fans, better dust off their 2010 draft boards tonight! (’With the FIRST overall pick in the 2010 draft, the St. Louis Rams select…’)Rams Q.B. Mark Bulger was limited to just 191 yards passing, completing only 17 passes in 36 attempts. That’s good for only 47.2 %. His quarterback rating was an anemic 63.5. Yick! Bulger’s ‘high point’ came on a 45 yard hookup with Wideout Laurent Robinson. Robinson had 87 yards on 5 catches, with a 17.4 average. Tight End Randy McMichael had 44 yards on 4 catches, had an eighteen yard gain and averaged 11 yards per catch. Running Back Steven Jackson had a fairly decent day, running for 67 yards on 16 carries, that’s good for 4.2 yards per carry. But his blocking left a lot to be desired. The other highlight (what few there were), were the fourteen tackles by Rams rookie Linebacker James Laurinitis. Laurinitis gained 11 solo tackles and assisted on three others. As for the negative, penalties undisciplined play disrupted what could have been a different outcome for this team.Starting Right Guard Richie Incognito twice earned personal fouls that destroyed what could have been long drives for the offense. After his second personal foul, Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo bench him, in favor of the more level-headed Adam Goldberg. The Line yielded three sacks and couldn’t seem to get in sync. The putrid play wasn’t limited to the Quarterback and the Offensive Line. Kicker Josh Brown missed wide right on a 37 yard field goal attempt. On the opening kickoff, receiver Donnie Avery fumbled the kickoff, giving the seahawks excellent field position. Finally, the Rams blocked a field goal and returned it for a touchdown, only to later to have it reversed by a booth review because they had twelve men on the field. Wat-Wat-WAH! The turn-a-round will not happen over night, but I wish Steve Spagnuolo a lot of luck. He’s going to need it!

Fights that Need to be made in Boxing!
October 3rd, 2009

Folks here a ’short’ list of some fights, that I believe should be made in Boxing. Fights that pit the best versus the best! Fights that just might capture the public’s attention.

1. Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather vs. ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley, for the WBA Welterweight title. Both men are coming off dominant performances against top-flight opponents. Shane Mosley shocked the boxing world with his Nine Round destruction of Antonio Margarito. Margarito didn’t help his own cause when he was caught with ‘plaster of paris’ on his hand wraps before the fight. Floyd Mayweather, back after an almost two year abscence, returned to the ring to soundly defeat Juan Manuel Marquez. The Mayweather-Mosley match-up has been envisioned for years! It will pit two of the most skillfull and successful champions of the past decade. Both men have Solid amatuer careers, excellent ring accumen, speed, solid defenses, good chins, footwork and are good punchers. Both men have also fought and beaten some of the biggest names in the sport. If and when this fight is made, it will definitely be a classic.

2. Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather vs. Manny ‘Pac Man’ Pacquiao

Manny ‘Pac Man’ Pacquiao, coming off a Second Round Devastating Knockout of Ricky Hatton, is for the moment the pound-for-pound king in the sport of boxing. Pacquiao has won titles in Six different weight classes from Flyweight, all the way up to Super Lighteweight. The ‘Pac Man’ has taken down some of the biggest names in boxing. Oscar DeLaHoya, Ricky Hatton, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barerra, Oscar Larios and Emmanuel Lucero, are just a few of the great fighters than Manny has defeated. Mayweather’s dance card includes the likes of: Diego Corrales, Zab Judah, Oscar DeLaHoya, Ricky Hatton, Genaro Hernandez, Angel Manfredy and DeMarucs Corley. I look forward to this marquee match-up pitting the best against the best. Not matter what weight division this fight takes place, it’s what fight fans are looking for and what the sport of boxing needs.

Hollie ‘Hot Stuff’ Dunaway vs. Carina Moreno (Rematch)

With very little amateur experience, Hollie Dunway burst onto the boxing scene, with her first professional fight in 2003. Hollie Dunaway is one of boxing’s best kept secrets. Standing Five feet tall and weighing around 105 pounds, Dunaway trains six days a week and at least twice, sometiems three times a day to maintain her competitive edge! She has captured Four titles in at least two different weight classes and is hungry for her next big challenge.

Carina Moreno, the reigning WBC Minimum weight champion has a career record of Twenty-One wins, six coming by way of knockout with only one defeat. An interesting point to be made, is that Moreno’s only loss came at the hands of Wendy Rodriguez on January 21, 2006 in Lousiana. It’s interesting because all of her other bouts, have taken place in California, specifically at Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore California. Undoubtedly, she has been the beneficiary of wide margins on the scorecards, or as some people say ‘The Hometown Decision.’ Conversely, Hollie Dunaway has been on the short end of decisions when she was fighting in or near her opponents hometown. When Hollie Dunaway fought Moreno for the WBC Minimumweight belt at the Tachi Palace in 2007, she lost via a Unanimous decision. Incredibly, ALL three judges had it the same 100-90! These judges must have been either Blind or just plain Dense! This fight should take place at a neutral sight, where neither fighter has an unfair advantage from the crowd, referee or the judges assigned to score the fight.

Juan Manual Marquez vs. one of the Top Lightweight Contenders or Lightweight Title-holders

On February 28, 2009, Juan Manuel Marquez took on ‘The Baby Bull’ Juan Diaz, for the vacant WBA-WBO Belts at the Toyota Center in Daiz’s hometown of Houston, Texas. In one of the candidates for ‘Fight the Year,’ Diaz applied constant pressure on Marquez along with a strong offense, while Marquez used his ring ‘wisdom’ and solid counterpunching to counter the attack of ‘The Baby Bull.’ In the end, Marquez’s saavy and counterpunching allowed him to knock Diaz out in Round Nine. After losing to Mayweather in his ‘comeback’ bout, Marquez is probably looking to re-establish his image at Lightweight. Fortunately for him, there are several attractive opponents in the Lightweight class. Michael Katsidis, Rolando Reyes, Joan Guzman, Ali Funeka, Edwin Valero,Paulus Moses and Anthony Peterson are types of the fighters that could provide a ‘challenge’ for Marquez. Not only would he be in unification bouts with the other belt holders of the division, but he would also be fighting some of the top contenders, who themselves are hungry for respect. I look forward to Marquez coming back to the Lightweight division and providing fight fans and boxing pundits with the performances that make him the respected and revered fighter that he can be.

Devon Alexander vs. Juan Diaz, for the WBC Superlightweight title

Devon ‘The Great’ Alexander, captured the WBC Super Lightweight title belt, in an Eigth Round Technical Knockout over the seasoned, yet unorthodoxed veteran Junior Witter. Alexander used fluid movements and ring generalship to confound Witter and consistently beat him to the punch with a stiff right jab, solid left hands and good counterpunching. Juan ‘Baby Bull’ Diaz, the former Lightweight Champion last fought on February 28, 2009, when he lost by Ninth Round Technical Knockout to Juan Manuel Marquez. Diaz has used a combination of good Ring Generalship, Solid Body and Combination Punching, plus Consistent Pressure to defeat Thirty Five of Thirty Seven opponents. He has fought and beaten some of the biggest names in the sport the likes of: Nate Campbell, Julio Diaz, Acelino Freitas, Paulie Malignaggi, Michael Katsidis and Lakva Sim,while Alexander’s biggest opponents to date, DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley and Junior ‘The Hitter’ Witter. This is a very interesting match-up, pitting two of boxing’s up and coming stars. Devon Alexander brings solid techincal skills, ring saavy and a good chin while Juan Diaz brings determination, constant pressure on his opponent, plus strong body punching and combinations. I look forward to this match-up whenever and wherever it takes place, preferably someplace neutral (Florida, New York, California) where neither fighter can have an unfair advantage.

Juan ‘Baby Bull’ Diaz vs. Paulie ‘Magic Man’ Malignaggi II (Re-match)

Juan Diaz and Paulie Malignaggi faced each other on August 22, 2009 at the Toyota Center in Houston Texas. Malignaggi took a big risk by venturing into ‘enemy’ territory, where he would be at a disadvantage in terms of judges, referee and the crowd. An interesting fact, is that when agreeing to the terms of the fight, Malignaggi ’signed off’ on Two of the Three Judges and the Referee Laurence Cole. From the opening bell, Malignaggi used a strong Left Jab, Solid Movement and good counter punching to ward off the pressure and body punching from the hard charging Diaz. In my opinion, Malignaggi seemed to carry to fight to Diaz, consistently beating him to the punch and using solid ring generalship to avoid the (pardon the pun) Bull rushes from Juan Diaz. Juan Diaz was the busier fighter, however many of his punches were blocked or didn’t land cleanly. The fight would go the full twelve rounds and Juan Diaz was ruled the winner by Unanimous Decision by scores of 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113. This was a controversial decision because it seemed that the judges were just giving the close rounds to Diaz, scoring his round stealing flurries (most of those punches didn’t land cleanly), instead of Malignaggi’s solid boxing and defense. In the post fight interview on HBO, Malignaggi expressed his displeasure (most of what he said I can not repeat in a christian way) in not getting a fair shake in Texas. I for one want to see these two have a rematch! Both fighters have proven to be worthy of being in the main event, both seem to have crowd pleasing styles and both men seem to have a following. Malignaggi-Diaz II, should take place at a nice, ‘neutral’ venue like: Staples Center in Los Angeles, Scottrade Center in St. Louis, MGM Grand or Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. To be fair to both fighters, a diverse trio of judges should be chosen along with the best ref in the game, ‘Fair but Firm’ Joe Cortez. We may even have another great trilogy in the making!

Other Intriguing Match-ups:

‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley vs. Andre Berto (WBC-WBA Welterweight Unification bout)

Andre Berto vs. Luis Collazo II (Rematch for Berto’s WBC Welterweight title)

Cory ‘The Next Generation’ Spinks vs. Kermit Cintron, for Spink’s IBF Super Welterweight belt.

Sergio Martinez vs. Alfredo ‘El Perro’ Angulo (Jr. Middleweight)

In the 2010 NFL Draft, The St. Louis Rams select....Part 1.
November 13th, 2009

With Seven games remaining in the 2010 season, the St. Louis Rams find themselves mired in the cellar of the NFC West with a record of One and Seven. It is likely that they will have one of the higher, if not highest pick in next spring's draft. The Rams, have many, many needs. There are immediate needs for a 'Franchise' Quarterback, Elite Wide Receiver, Pass Rushing Defensive End, not to mention another Outside Linebacker and maybe another starting safety if Oshiomogho Atogwe can't be signed to a long-term deal. This brings me to the draft, whom do the Rams draft with their first round pick? Let's begin with The Quarterbacks. In the 2010 Draft, Three Quarterbacks, Sam Bradford(Oklahoma), Jimmy Clausen (Motre Dame), Colt McCoy (Texas) and Jake Locker (Washington) are projected to be Top Five to Top Twenty Picks.Another choice, possibly chosen in Round Two is Tony Pike from Cincinnati. Sam Bradford, the reigning Heisman Trophy Winner, came into the 2009 season with hopes of picking up where he left off in 2208. Last year, he threw for over 3,000 yars and helped the Sooners to the BCS Championship game. However early in the 2009 season, Bradford's season ended with a shoulder injury suffered in a game against the Texas Longhorns. Bradford elected to have season ending surgery to repair his shoulder. He then announced his intention to enter the 2010 NFL Entry Draft. When healthy, Bradford may be the best Q.B. Prospect of the bunch. He has a good arm, not a great one, exceptionally accurate, intelligent. Some pundits have even gone far to dub him as another Peyton Manning. His durability is questionable in addition to his ability to play in a traditional offense. Oklahoma utilizes the Spread Offense and Bradford mainly plays from the shotgun. Jimmy Clausen, The Junior Quarterback from The University of Notre Dame, is a classic drop back pocket passer. He went on to start nine games in 2007, throwing for 1,254 yards with a 56.3 completition percentage (138-245) and a 7-6 touchdown-interception ratio. The numbers are not mind-boggling, but put them with a visibly weak offensive line, a lackluster running attack and almost no speed outside, and they are a testament to his ability. Clausen had a breakthrough sophomore campaign in 2008, when he passed for 3,172 yards, completing 60.9% (268-440) of his passes with an impressive 25-17 TD/INT ratio. The 6'2" 220 pound Clausen, has Solid Arm Strength with good mechanics and footwork. He reads defenses well and rarely is fooled by disguised coverage. Very accurate in the medium-to-long range area, this is a coveted trait in the NFL. On the down side, he still has work to do, in terms of improving his footwork seeing as he is NOT a threat to run out of the pocket. Also, he needs improvement in his short-to-medium range throws. They are a bit slow, and Clausen will need to add more bulk. He is projected to go in the first dround, but I'm hearing varying reports from him being forecasted from 'Franchise Quarteback' to 'The Next Brady Quinn,' to the 'Biggest Bust in the Draft.' In more promising news Clausen seems to be gaining more maturity, after his brush with the law in 2007. However in November of 2009, was 'sucker punched' by some impotent, retarded, low-down coward, after Notre Dame's loss on senior day to UConn. Jake Locker, the starting Q.B. for the University of Washington, earned several All-American Honors as a Freshman including being named to the PAC-10's All Conference Freshman Team. That year he threw for 2,062 yards with 14 touchdowns. He began 2008 on fire before suffering a broken thumb, but still had a decent season with 512 yards passing. Locker is 6'3", 223 and is athletic with quick footwork. He has a good, not great arm and is cable of making most of the NFL-type throws. Locker gets good zip on the out patterns, but will have a hard time fitting the ball into tight spots as well as to some of the elite passers. With good mechanics and smooth delivery, Locker shows touch on short and intermediate passes. On the downside, Locker is not the purest passer and is inconsistent. Case in point during his Freshman season. Although he threw for fourteen touchdowns, he also threw for FIFTEEN Interceptions! He also has a tendency to lock up to his primary target for too long (similar to Rams Q.B. Marc Bulger) and then hold the ball too long. It would seem that Locker just needs more experience on a pro-style offense. In the end, it may beneficial for Mr. Locker and teams interested in drafting him, that he return to school for his senior year. Let's move on to Wide Receivers. Dez Bryant. The Wideout from Oklahoma State University, came into the 2009 season with much fanfare. Bryant, was projected to be a Top Five Pic. However, has was suspended after playing only Three games this fall and that will undoubtedly hurt his draft status. His last taste of 'Game Action' was on September 19 in a home game against Rice. On that day he caught Nine passes for One Hundred and Sixty-One Yards and Two Touchdowns. The Good. Dez Bryant, has the size NFL Teams are looking for. At 6'2" and 210 pounds, Bryant has the size and athleticism that will allow him to get to most jump balls and provide a big target for the quarterback. Bryant has solid vision and good hands. He's also proved to be and explosive punt returner. The Bad. Dez Bryant hasn't played a down of 'competitive' football since the thrid week of the season. He WILL NOT be in Football shape come the time of the draft, let alone training camp. He will need time to get back into the daily routine (practice and game action). It's said that he isn't very fast or has breakaway speed and his route running is still suspect. Walterfootball.com predicts that he will be another Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson, which in the Rams case, will be a VAST IMPROVEMENT! Other Receivers that may garner the Rams' attention are: Damian Williams (USC 6'1" 190), Brandon LaFell (LSU 6'3" 209) and Golden Tate (Notre Dame 5'11" 210). The Rams must make the right choice, because their receiver corps and offense as a whole depends on it!!! I will return within the next week or two with Part Two, focusing on the defense. And quite Frankly, the Rams need ALL OF THE HELP THEY CAN GET!!

St. Louis Blues Update
July 10th, 2010

This offseason, the St. Louis Blues, outside of trading for goaltender Jaroslav Halak from the Montreal Canadiens, have not made the 'eye catching' moves that Blues fans are clamoring for. First, let's start with Halak. On Tuesday July 6th, the Blues and Halak's agent, agreed to terms on a brand new four-year, $15 million deal averaging $3.75 million per season. Halak helped the Canadiens reach the Eastern Conference Finals last year and feel he will help them reach the next level. The Blues also resigned team free agents: Alex Steen, Cam Janssen, Brad Winchester and Carlo Colaiacovo. I hope for their sake that they resign Top Ten Heavyweight D.J. King. Although Cam Janssen provides the team with a deterrent, as well as energy, D.J. King strikes fear and awe in the mind's of other fighters, is one of NHL'S Top Heavyweights, and may very well be the NHL Heavyweight Champion, after soundly defeating Derek Boogard of the Minnesota Wild. The team, STILL needs to add some scoring punch, but wants to do so at their pace and when the price is right. The Blues also have to get Defenseman Eric Johnson resigned to a long term deal. I for one hope that the new G.M. Doug Armstrong makes the right moves, because this team is once again at a crossroads and need strong leadership, both on and off the ice.

Farewell to Bob Probert
July 10th, 2010

My Condolences to the family of Former NHL Tough Guy Bob Probert. I can't imagine what his family and friends went through, first of all seeing him collapse and then trying to save his life. Mr. Probert died of an apperant heart attack, after collapsing on a boat, Monday July 5th during a trip with his family. His Father-In law performed CPR until medical personnel could be summoned. CPR by emergency crews and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful at Windsor Regional Hospital. During his 17 year career, Probert a reputation for being a rugged player who logged 3,300 penalty minutes. From 1988 to April 2nd 1994, this man was regarded as the 'Heavyweight Champion' of the NHL, taking on all comers who were brave enought to fight him. His biggest rivals were: Tie Domi, Marty McSorley, Todd Ewen and Stu Grimson. Contrary to popular belief, Bob Probert DID lose fights, and sometimes he lost badly. Most noteably to: Todd Ewen (1/24/87), where he was knocked unconcious by a Todd Ewen Right Hand! Troy Crowder, during the 1990-91 season. In that fight, Crowder bloddies and batter Probert with Hard, Bone cutting jolts, that sent the defeated Red Wing to the locker room for numerous stitches, to close a gash beneath his right eye. On April 2nd, 1994, Sandy McCarthy and the Calgary Flames travel to Detroit to face the Wings in a late season game. He decided to drop the gloves with 'Big Bob.' McCarthy not only hung tough, enduring Probert's attack and endurance, but he got the better of Bob, dethroning him as 'Champion,' by a Solid unanimous Decision. Not many fans of Probert would like to hear this, but Probert's biggest and worst defeats came at the hands of St. Louis Blues tough guy, Tony Twist. On three occasions, (2/8/96), (10/24/96) and (12/12/96), Twist knocked Probert down THREE TIMES and SOUNDLY defeated, Stunned and humiliated him! Twist was the One fighter Probert could not beat! However, his place in NHL histroy is secure and this man will one day be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada. He will be remembered for: Memorable fights, protecting Steve Yzerman, bringing a new facet of the game to hockey, as well as, being a Kind, Gracious Man, tabbed as a 'Gentle Giant,' and one who loved his family and friends.

The Tao of Martial Arts, what's practial...Part 1
January 27, 2010

Hello Folks.

For quite some time, I have wanted to post a blog giving some insight as to what martial arts are PRACTICAL in terms of effectiveness 'on the street' and what martial arts you need to steer clear of. Part One of this blog, will deal with the Martial Art systems that are effective or have some practically to them.
EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE
-Krav Maga
-Haganah/F.I.G.H.T.
-LOTAR
-Survival Hisardut(Dennis Hanover Hisardut)
-Combat Hapkido
-Jeet Kune Do/Jun Fan Gung Fu
-MCMAP: Marine Corps. Martial Arts Program
-Kenpo Karate
-Garimot Arnis
-Kali/Escrima, Serrada Escrima
-Silat
SOMEWHAT EFFECTIVE
-Joe Lewis's Amercan Karate Systems
-Hapkido
-Muay Thai
-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
-Shotokan Karate
-Kyuokyushi Karate (Oyama Karate)
SYSTEMS TO STEER CLEAR OF
-Commando Krav Maga
-Tae Kwon Do
-Tang Soo Do
-Shido-Kan Shorin ryu
-Capoeira

To date, the martial arts that offer the most effectiveness 'on the street', are ones that offer a well-rounded curicullum and one gives their practioners usefull tools against common attacks and 'modern weapons.' By modern weapons, I mean defenses against Guns, Knives, Broken bottles, other Edged weapons Blunt weapons (Hammers, Clubs, Bats, Crowbars, Axe Handels). These arts also prepare the practioner by putting them through a solid areobic and cardio-vascular workout and also gives them a feeling of 'contact.' Parteners/Instructors hold pads, focus mitts and kick shields for students to kick and punch Full-Speed and Power. The 'Holder' gets a feeling of what it is like to get hit. After training a while students are then exposed to sparring, albeit in a LIGHT, then MODERATE contact manner (Students wear Full Headgear, Mouthpiece and Shin guards).

Boxing News March, 2010

Devon Alexander Unified the WBC and IBF Super Lightweight belt with an impressive Techinical Knockout, stopping Juan Urango at 1:12 of Round Eight. Alexander established control from the outset, peppering Urango with a stiff right jab and blistering combinations to the head and body. Alexander's trainer Kevin Cunningham encouraged his fighter (in words that I will not repeat) to stay low, not pull out with his hands down and to stick to the game plan. It worked, because Alexander was able to withstand Urango's constant pressure and unorthodox way of fighting. By the middle rounds, Urango began to show the worse for wear, with cuts around his eyes and blood oozing from his nose. By round Eight, Urango was beginning to look like a spent force. Devon Alexander stunned him with an uppercut that placed him on his back. After the ref, gave him the mandatory eight count, Alexander continued his attack. A short time later, Urango was hammer with shots to the temple and crumpled to the canvas. This time he was finished. By the time he rose to his feet, the referee waved the fight off, giving Alexander the victory. Devon 'The Great' successfully defends his WBC Super Lightweight belt and adds the IBF Strap, making him the unfied champion at 140 pounds! In post fight interviews, Alexander said he would like his next fight to be in St. Louis. Future opponents could include the likes of: Zab Judah, Kendall Holt, Herman Ngoudjo, Juan Diaz, IBO Super Lightweight Champion Paulie Malignaggi, Nate Campbell and WBO Super Lightweight Champion Timothy Bradley. Devon Alexander truly is the American Dream. He has worked his way up from nothing, to become Champion of the World!

Sam Bradford, The Rams Next Starting Quarterback
April 7th, 2010.

On Monday March 29th, 2010 Sam Bradford had his 'Pro Day' in Norman, Oklahoma to put to rest any fears about his 'repaired' right shoulder as well as any concerns about him being 'rusty'. Well, Bradford showed no ill-effets completing 63 of 64 passes. By some of the scouts in attendance, Bradford's shoulder appeared to be stringer as he had some 'zing,' dispelling the myth of his arm strength not being strong enough. Rams Head Coach Steve Spagnulo said he was “very impressed” and spent time “recruiting” Bradford on the plusses of St. Louis and the Rams. This 'Pro Day,' was a big step for Sam Bradford, but it must be looked at in this light. Bradford had time to rehearse his passes and plays. On April 19th, just three days before the NFL Draft Bradford will have a private workout at Rams Park. On that day, he will have to throw whatever passes and run whatever plays the Rams coaches have prepared for him. The Rams will also hold private workouts for Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy. This organization has a big decision to make. If they take a Quarterback with the First Overall pick, they will need to protect him. Presumably, the Rams don't want their new Q.B. to have the same fate as now Ex-Ram Marc Bulger. A Strong Offensive Line with versatile backups must be in place to ensure the Quarterback enough time to find his receivers as well as open holes for Steven Jackson. By all accounts, the Rams will draft Bradford and have even begun preliminary discussions with his agent on a contract. I for one, am looking forward to this draft. The will be the first time that the St. Louis Rams draft a Quarterback in the First round, let alone with the first overall pick. Let's hope it's a good pick, because it will either: A. Steer the Franchise back to respectability or B. Continue this exercise in Futility!

In Other Rams News:

Veteran Offensive Lineman Hank Fraley and Outside Linebacker Na'il Diggs were signed to multi-year contracts. Diggs, 31, was signed to a Two Year contract to play Outside Linebacker and provide Solid Run Defense. He has played 10 seasons in the NFL, recently for the Carolina Panthers and before that with the Green Bay Packers. Hank Fraley, 33, enters his 11th year and the Former Cleveland Brown has played most of his career at Center. He is expected to backup Starting Center Jason Brown and also compete for the starting job at Right Guard.

Boxing Update
April 25th, 2010

Folks, it has been an interesting year in the boxing world. We have had to deal with a tragic circumstance of Edwin Valero stabbing his wife to death them hanging himself inside of his jail cell. Kelly Pavlik was dethroned by Sergio Martinez in a Unanimous Decision on April 17th, in Atlantic City, N.J. Manny Pacquiao won a lopsided decison in Dallas, TX, against Joshua Clottey. A good fighter, but one who was out of his element in BIG D! The Pac Man, will more than likely face the winner of the Shane Mosley-Floyd Mayweather Mega Fight on May 1st, more on that later. Andre Berto returned to the ring to defeat veteran southpaw Carlos Quintana, registering a techincal knockout victory in the eigth round. It is the opinion of this journalist, that Berto's next bout should be a re-match with Slick Southpaw Luis Collazo. In their first bout, which took place on January 17th, 2009 Collazo gave Berto all he could handle frustarting him with crisp combinitations, solid ring generalship and good defense, but he received the short end of the decision losing by close margins on two of the scorecards (114-113) and a large margin the other (116-111). As for Martinez and Pavlik, The Ghost entered the ring, looking to demolish what he and ringside obersevers thought would be an overmatched opponent. However, Martinez the WBO Super Welterweight champion had a different plan. He stung Pavlik with a Stiff Jab and Hard, Crisp shots that bloddied and battered The Middleweight champion. The crowd at the Convention Center was Pro-Pavlik, and they roared their approval whenever Pavlik appreared to land ANYTHING! The fight would go the Full Twelve Rounds and Martinez would win a Close, but Solid Unanimous Decision. There is a rematch clause in their contract and Pavlik has already stated that he will persue a second fight with Martinez.

Are the Cardinals playing a Hard Nine?
June 27th, 2010

Today the Cardinals lost to the Kansas City Royals, the Lowly Royals by a score of 10-3. The Redbirds lost two out of three to three Royals winding up 3 and 3 on the roadtrip. They return home for an important seven game homestand against the formidable Arizona Diamondbacks and Central Division rival, Milwaukee Brewers. Needless to say, this is an important homestand for our Redbirds. The Cincinnati Reds albeit aren't playing at the level they were a few weeks ago, are here to stay in my opinion. Scott Rolen has resurrected his career, currently with sixteen home runs and forty nine runs batted in. Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Drew Stubbs and Johnny Gomes are having solid years as well. Reds skipper, Dusty Baker also has a good starting rotation. Starter Mike Leake is enjoying a very good year, being amongst the league leaders in era (2.92), and a fine 5 and 1 record. Johnny Cueto and the serviceable Bronson Arroyo share the team lead in wins with seven. Just like the Cardinals, there is room for improvement with the Reds. It begins with our so-called 'Future' Hall of Fame Manager. Tony LaRussa needs to get a CLUE and promote from within, instead of acquiring washed-up past their prime vets. Call ups of David Delzcaso, Tyler Greene and John Jay would be wise moves. Currently, Jay and Greene are having supurb years batting wise and are not liabilities in the field. David Delzcaso, currently has over FIFTEY Runs Batted IN,as a Second Baseman. You'd think 'Ole Skippy's' job would be in jeporady?! ALL THREE of these farmhands, would provide punch to the line-up as well as solid defense! Back to my point about the 'Hard Nine.' I am getting tired of seeing this Cardinals team, give up when they are down by Five or more Runs! The Cardinals recently played games against the Mariners, A's, Royals and Blue Jays. They went 7 and 5, instead of going 9 and 3. At Least an attempt should be made at trying to win the game, especially when the play inferior teams! And Please Tony please, please stop batting the pitcher eighth!

St. Louis Cardinals Trade Deadline Deals and Update
July 31st, 2010

The Cardinals addressed their starting pitching needs today, by acquiring Right Handed Starter Jake Westbrook and Minor League pitching prospect Nick Greenwood from the Cleveland Indians in a three team deal. Ryan Ludwick was sent to the San Diego Padres, while the Indians received prospects from the Padres. Westbrook is 6-7, with a 4.51 earned run average in 21 starts for Cleveland. He is slated to make his Cardinals debut, on Monday August 2nd. The Cardinals sacrificed a signifcant piece of the offense to land Westbrook, however it was highly unlikely that the team would have been able to re-sign Ludwick in the offseason. Jake Westbrook provides not only depth, but a quality arm in the rotation. Adding Westbrook to Carpenter, Wainwright, Garcia and Klye Loshe who will return soon from a rehab stint, gives the Cardinals a strong rotation and a deep bullpen, with Blake Hawksworth returning there. To surpass and stay ahead of the Reds, the Cardinals will have to play consisently better ball, both on the road AND at home.

Sam, Finally under contract and officially a RAM!
July 30th, 2010

Sam Bradford, The St. Louis Rams First overall pick and potential 'franchise' Quarteback, made for some tense moments from the outset of the Rams opening training camp, at Rams Park in Earth City. But, just in time for the first Full Squad workout, the Rams and Bradford agreed to terms which will wind up being the richest in rookie history. Sam Bradford, signed a Six Year, $78 million deal. $50 million is guaranteed money. If certain incentives are reached it can max out at $86 million. All of the Rams draft choices have been signed. Now, let's see if they can play FOOTBALL!

Gateway to Greatness
August 9th, 2010

An announced crowd of 9,117 spectators, attended Don King Productions, 'Gateway to Greatness,' where St. Louisan Devon Alexander defended his Super Lightweight titles against the skilled and tough Andre Kotelnik. Also on the Card were Tavoris Cloud defending his IBF Lt. Heavyweight against Glen Johnson, Cory Spinks taking on Cornelius Bundrage for the IBF Super Welterweight title and Ryan Coyne taking on undefeated cruiserweight Warren Browning. There were many celeberties in attendance such as: Evander Holyfield, Floyd Mayweather, Steven Jackson and Ring Announcer Michael Buffer.

There were two noteable fight on the untelevised portion of the card.
1.'The Irish Outlaw' Ryan Coyne took on Warren Browning for the WBC USNBC Cruiserweight title in fight scheduled for Twelve Rounds. The fight was a good one, both men displayed solid boxing skills and toughness, but Ryan Coyne's relentless, punishing attack proved to be the difference as he sent Browning to the canvas in Round Nine, with a Sharp Left Hand to the chin. Browning attempted to rise, but it was in vain. The Ref reached the count of ten, givng Coyne the victory and thw WBC USNBC Cruiserweight championship. Coyne has put himself in line for not only more highly profiled fights, but also an opportunity to receive more television exposure.

2. Cory Spinks vs. Cornelius Bundrage.

Cory 'The Next Generation' Spinks, returned to the ring from a 14 month layoff, to defend his IBF Super Welterweight belt against the man ranked no.2 by the IBF, Cornelius 'K-9' Bundrage. An interesting point, James 'Buddy' McGirt, would be the chief second in Spinks's corner and the legendary Emmanuel Stewart would be in Bundrage's. I happened to be in the Media Lounge eating when dinner when I watched Cory Spinks begin his walk to the ring, on one of the monitors. To my displeasure, I watched Cory, dance, shuffle and sashay his way down the isle. I thought to myself, 'This isn't going to be good,' Once the opening bell rang, I was right. The man known as 'K9', was all over Spinks, pressuring him to the ropes and pummeling him with hard, clean shots to the head and body. It was clearly obvious that Spinks' better days are far behind him. Due to his long layoff, he had lost whatever skills he had left. Cory was powerless to defend himself. From Rounds Two through Four, Bundrage chased the fleeing Spinks, cutting the ring off and pounding his hapless foe. The carnage came to an end in hte fifth round. Spinks had been weakend to the point that he could no longer run from Bundrage and 'K9', landed a series of punches that not only sent Spinks down, the punches sent him THROUGH THE ROPES! Spinks rose to his feet and took the mandatory eight count, but when the ref motioned for Spinks to walk to him (to check on his mobility and coherentness), Spinks was unresponsive and the fight was called off. Cory was extremely upset afterwards, his wife was unsuccessful at trying to comfort him. Cory, it's time to hang up your gloves. You were very fortunate that the ref stopped the fight, and considering there are far more dangerous fighters in your division, the wise move is for you to retire.

HBO went on the air with Boxing After Dark at 9:00pm. The co-feature to the main event featured Tavoris 'Thunder' Cloud, defending his IBF Lt. Heavyweight title against the rugged veteran Glen Johnson. From the outset, Cloud was the sharper of the two, landing crisp, clean shots to Johnson's head and body. Round Two will be a you tube classic. Both fighters 'fought in a phone booth,' standing toe-to-toe hammering each other! Wow! But from there, Cloud dominated the rest of the fight and won by unanimous Decision 116-112 on all three scorecards, retaining his title. Cloud's next opponent may be WBC-IBO Champion, Chad Dawson.

Finally came The Main Event. The fight everyone saved and paid their hard earned dollars to see. Devon Alexander, 'The Great' defending his Super Lightweight Titles against the rugged and game Andre Kotelnik. The spectators went wild when Ring Announcer Michael Buffer crowed 'LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!' So did I! Alexander tried to establish control with a rapier-like right jab and good combinations to the head and body. Kotelnik countered with consistent pressure and his own offense, which consisted of a Solid Right Jab and strong punches. Alexander dominated the first four rounds, but there was reason for concern. He was getting hit more often than normal and Kotelnik displayed a good defense as well. From Round Four onward, it was a Tough, Gritty and Hard Fought fight. Devon Alexander was cut (accidental headbutt) for the first time in his caerre. The bout would go the full tewle rounds and Devon 'The Great,' would win by unanimous decision 116-112, on all three scorecards. My scorecard was closer, 115-112, for Alexander. This fight left some doubt as to Alexander and his plan for the fight, but the irony it may prove to be a good thing. Those fighters who may have avoided Devon, now may be more willing to get into the ring to fight him. This will also be a good opportunity for Trainer/Manager Kevin Cunningham to go back to the drawing board and come up with a better fight plan. I liked this fight, though Alexander won and am looking forward to his next fight, which may be early next year against Timothy Bradley. On to another point, I am also looking forward to seeing Andre Kotelnik fight again, especially on another Don King card here in St. Louis. In my opinion, he won over a lot of people and made some new fans.
