Lake Fork Report: May 29, 2008

Lake Level: Fork: Full

Water Clarity: Main Lake is clear. Most creeks are clear too.

Water temp: The water temps have varied from 75 - 78.

Weather: Highs in upper 90’s this next week.

Fishing Report
Lake Fork:
The fishing here at Lake Fork is great. Last Sunday during the Legend Tournament Ron Peterson of Gotcha Distributing, one of my sponsors and friend caught a 10.23 lb lunker winning him a new Legend boat. Ron caught his winning fish on a Revenge Jig and a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver. He was fishing one of my favorite holes where we have had many fish over 10 lbs. Congratulations Ron. After the tournament was over Sunday, I had the opportunity to take a lady angler fishing. Kelly caught a huge fish from the same area weighing 10.40 lbs. Kelly caught her fish on a Reaction Innovations Big Unit. This is also the same area that Hailey caught her 11.28 lb fish with me only a few weeks ago. It is neat how some areas just hold big fish.
Once the water warms up to 75 + degrees you will very seldom find me fishing less that 15 ft of water. By this time the fish that I am targeting have already passed the post spawn phase and now are beginning their early summer pattern. Here I am looking for points, ledges, humps etc. One key thing to target once these structures are found is brush. Luckily I took the time over the years to set out brush piles in key places. These brush piles provide a habitat for fish of all sizes and species. In these brush piles I use an assortment of baits depending on how the bass are set up on them at any given time. I like to fish the tops of the trees and brush first with a Sebile Koolie Minnow (deep diver). Then I will go with a Texas rigged Reaction Innovations Big Unit on a ¼ ounce weight unpegged. This light rig will actually stay on top of the brush and usually will not fall into it. Lastly I will use two baits to penetrate the brush and catch the fish that are buried in it. A Texas rig with a 3/8 to ½ ounce weight and a ¾ to 1 ounce jig will do the trick here. When fishing deep and around brush / trees I like to use 65 – 80 lb braid. Here we are NOT looking for small fish, this is where the lunkers live. With a braided line like Power Pro, when you set the hook and start to crank, they WILL come to the boat. This line is strong.
If for some reason power fishing fails to produce for you. Try a dropshot rig or a Carolina rig and use your electronics to find schools of fish on open water drops.
Folks the night fishing is about to be phenomenal. I usually don’t promise anything on any of my trips, but night fishing here on Lake Fork is usually a sure bet. Remember that I have over 20 + years of night fishing experience and safety is my number one concern. The air temps usually fall into the mid 70’s so this makes summer time night fishing very enjoyable. I have shown folks for years that by this time of year many of the fish we catch during the day have holes in their mouths as a testimony of catch and release. But the fish we catch at night very seldom, if ever have holes in their mouths solid proof that some fish are nocturnal and only feed at night. I try to compare trophy size Bass to a trophy size whitetail deer; they only come out to feed at night!

Well folks it’s been a long drawn out spring here at Lake Fork. Hot one day and in the 40’s the next. I first noticed bed fish the last week of February on the north end of the lake. Now it’s May 13 and we are still catching good numbers sight fishing on the south end. This past weekend we had a 9.7 and an 8.4 along with a few more 4’s and 5’s, all off beds. But, I look forward to that winding down to an end this week.

With the upcoming Legend tournament this weekend, here are few tips that should get you bit. Going into a tournament on Lake Fork, anglers have two choices to make. Do I fish for one big fish to win or lots of small under the slot fish to win hourly money? Well, the Legend tournament is an easy decision. They are giving away a really nice Legend boat for the biggest under the slot fish! By fishing with finesse type baits you increase your chance of catching 15-16 inch fish but still stand a chance of hanging into a big stick bender. This weekend I would approach the lake by fishing a post spawn pattern. Take a look at the map and find ditches, creeks, points and road beds close to spawning coves and flats. Here I would target 10-20 foot of water with three baits. A dropshot, shakey head and a Carolina rig. On these rigs I would throw a reaction innovations Flirt or a Smallie Beaver. Start out with natural colors like green pumpkin, xmass pumpkin, California 420, watermelon red or watermelon. Lately we have been catching more fish by dipping the tail slightly in chartreuse dye.

Another thing I have noticed is that the hydrilla and milfoil is growing more this year than the past 3-4 years. It is actually choking the fish out in many places that I like to fish. We have been finding larger schools of shad and bass in areas that are lacking these grasses.

Once you have caught some unders or if you just want to go for the big one, here are a few tips for that. Take a Sebile Koolie minnow and dig the bottom on main lake deep structure. The colors amber fashion and white lady should work the best. Use your electronics to find the schools of feeding fish, cast past them and crank it through. I like to use 20 lb power pro braid or 15 lb. Seagaur fluorocarbon line for this application. If you know they are there but fail to hook up, try the dropshot prior to leaving the area.

Some areas you might want to graph are SRA, sandbar off the dam, Chaney point road bed and Dale hump. These places are a great post spawn hang out for large schools of fish.

News: The 2008 season has started with a bang. The lake is very busy, but most folks are really catching some Lake Fork Hawgs. Be sure to have your April trips booked and motel rooms booked as everyone is filling fast for next month. Feel free to call or email me for available dates.

Goodness, where do I start? It’s Easter Sunday at 5:00 in the morning and I am just now getting the time to do my report. Got to be at church in a few hours and then back on a trip at lunch. This is turning out to be the best year for Lake Fork in over 10 years. There has not been a day in March that we have not ended up wacking some big fish. Seems like everyone who approaches me at the marinas and boat ramps are having some good success as well. It has not mattered if we fish the upper or lower end of the lake, good numbers of big fish can be found.

This report is going to be on the last 3 days only due to the rain. The water temperature is rising quickly and the lake is clearing up from our recent rains. There are two different fish to target this next week, pre-spawners and spawners. For the pre-spawn fish I am having the best luck on a Reaction Innovations sweet beaver, texas rigged. Use this bait in 5-12 foot of water and fish outside grass lines and timber. This has produced the best numbers. Color selection on the beaver has not been that important. We have used green pumpkin/red flake, watermelon/red and big Texan. For the shallow water fish I am using 3 baits. Early in the morning the Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper will pick up cruising fish up close to the bank or over the shallow grass beds. Once the water warms to 62 degrees, its time to go sight fishing. My two favorite baits this month for bed fishing, have been a 4.0 Boom Boom tube in California 420 and a lizard. Color is very important here because some fish on beds will eat one color over another. I keep 4-5 different color Tubes and Lizards handy.

I will have some great pictures on my website later tonight. I went fishing alone on Thursday afternoon just doing some scouting, I caught my biggest fish of the 2008 season a 9.2lb bed fish. Jersey Dan from the Texas Fishing Forum was nice enough to come over and get some great photos for me. Congrats to my the following clients – Will Simcox / 9.0lb, Rodney Harrison / 7 +, John from Texas Air Hydraulics and his friend Justin / 7.8 lb. These fish were all caught in the last three days and were entered in the Lake Fork Big Bass Survey.

My March is now full. But, I have generated a waiting list, just incase of cancellations or reschedules. April is a great month to fish Lake Fork and it too is filling fast, so call us soon.

Fishing on Lake Fork has been up and down lately due to the recent cold snaps. The water temperature has tried to reach 55 degrees, but gets knocked back down due to some chilly nights. But, this week is supposed to be warm so get the boat cleaned up and come on down for some good fishing. We have been catching 15-30 fish a day, depending on water temp. Last Thursday my clients had their heart broke by three double digit fish. One broke off a jig due to setting the hook too hard, one straightened the hooks out on a Rogue and the other shook off a jig. There is nothing easy about catching a trophy fish out here, even after you get a big one to bite things can go drastically wrong. Make sure you are using quality hooks, line, rod and reel. This will work to your advantage, I promise. We have noticed waves of fish holding on the first breakline and half way back in the creeks. These fish are just sitting back, feeding and waiting on the next couple of warm days. Remember the creeks up North will hold pre-spawn fish first as they warm up the quickest.

The lure selection is really simple. If a giant bass is all you want, tie on a ¼ ounce Revenge jig in black/blue/purple or watermelon red and fish the outside grass line or on the creek edges. If numbers are what you are looking for, tie on a Flirt in Juicy and fish the very back of the creeks, lots of males here. People are asking me what they should throw right now on Lake Fork. I just tell them to fish however they are confident. Just about anything stands a chance to catch a huge fish on Lake Fork right now. Crankbaits, rogues, spinnerbaits, lipless baits, senkos, flukes and lizards all will do the trick right now. Just cover water until you get bit, when you do catch one set up camp and fish that area hard. If you catch a fish this time of year, there will be more in the general area.

I have mainly fish the creeks on the East side of Lake Fork. But, some of my clients have been fishing Little Caney with some great success. Hideaway Harbor Marina, in the back of Little Caney is a great place to launch for access. Larry and Jerry (owners) will keep a close eye on your truck and trailer. Little Caney is one of my favorite spring time creeks on this Lake. I will post my next report when we get the first glance at fish on the beds. For the last 3 years this has been the last week in February, you just have to know where to look!

As I write this report I am reflecting on the fun I had yesterday on the lake with an old friend of mine. Mike caught his personal best (7.5 lbs) at 8:30 in the morning and nearly beat it again at 1:00 in the afternoon (7.2 lbs). We lost an absolute giant of a fish yesterday that somehow pulled free of # 3 owner wide gap trebles. Although 7 lbs. on Lake Fork is not uncommon, it sure made for a good start and an exciting day. The number one thing I look for in February is warm water. If you can find areas that lack current or wind and have grass close to deep water, you will be in business. I will be throwing only a few baits for the next two weeks. These are lipless baits like the Sebile Flatt Shad, Stick baits like a rogue and a revenge spinnerbait. Lately, colors have not been important. I primarily throw shades of red or gold. But, I have seen other anglers using white, chrome, and chartreuse with good results.

If you are new to Lake Fork this year, here are two areas to target this month. It’s no secret that Birch and Glade creeks have produced huge fish year after year. But, you might want to check out Long Branch, Coon, Opposum, Little White Oak, White Oak and Penson Bay. The best thing to do is just cover water until you can find a group of fish. Once you locate them you should be able to catch several in one area. I like to fish rogues early and lipless baits the rest of the day. The spinnerbait has always worked best for me in windy or overcast conditions.

Catching Bass on Lake Fork the next two weeks is pretty simple. It’s usually the most productive time of year for most anglers. February and March on Lake Fork has provided more anglers with a Bass of a lifetime than any other months of the year. (Summer Night trips do not count!!!!!)

Good luck fishing and remember to use good quality hooks and line. The Sebile baits come with Owner hooks that do not need changing. But, most all others need to be converted. I would not fish any line less than 17 lb. test, unless you want to be heartbroken, 20 – 30 lb. is spooled up on my reels. Finesse fishing has its time and place, but February and March at Lake Fork is not that time!

Lake Monticello has been keeping me too busy to get out much on Fork. But, starting next week I will be back to Lake Fork to fish the new Sebile Flatt Shad for the pre-spawn bite. This bait is going to catch us some whoppers. This is going to be an exciting year for Lake Fork.

Lake Monticello has been a lot of fun lately. Two weeks ago I noticed a huge wave of fish move up onto beds. They were up for 3 days and then they were done. But, we are still catching many fish in a pre-spawn pattern. So the spawn is nowhere close to over yet. Last Friday I had a trip and we wore the fish out. It was cloudy and the topwater bite lasted the whole trip. We had 20 + topwater fish in just four hours. It was so much fun watching those fish blow up on the Sebile splasher. We also caught a good amount of fish on a Reaction Innovations Vixen. My medium action Moby Custom Angle rod is great for topwater, not a single fish got off all day with this new rod.

Saturday I went with Barry Hanson (East Texas Angler) to film a show on Monticello. That morning I stopped by the carwash to spray off the boat, mistake! When I got to the lake at 7:00 am I had a ½ inch sheet of ice covering the boat, soap bubbles were frozen solid. We had a good morning catching fish on Sweet Beavers. Mid day we only caught a few fish on the Arkie U-bolt head with a flirt, but some anglers from Oklahoma came thru the same area we had just fished and caught 11 fish over 3 lbs. on roadrunners and beetlespins. I don’t usually bass fish with these two baits and was humbled by this. Its funny to me how fish are and how they will only bite certain baits sometimes.

If you are coming to Monticello this week try to start early or stay late. The topwater bite is awesome right now.

Weather: Lows today in the 30’s with a warming trend and a chance of rain this weekend.

News: Sebile baits has introduced a Blood Red Series for 2008 into its line of fascinating baits that will be available starting at the Arlington outdoor show next weekend at Brannons Sporting Goods. These new baits are like nothing you have ever used before and believe me, it’s the real deal!

It is hard to believe but I have only been on Lake Fork once in the last two weeks. Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh have been taking up all of my time. The fishing on these lakes has been outstanding so this weeks report will focus on these two fine lakes. But, another 3 weeks and Lake Fork should be ON!

Monticello has been outstanding. The fish are in a pre-spawn pattern with a few fish starting to show up in the shallows on nest. Of course we have been doing our best catching during the week when the lake is not so packed with anglers. Also, just like in the years past, the wintertime night bite is awesome on this lake.

Sight fishing this year is being hindered by stained water in Smith and Blundell creeks. But, I know that a lot of fish are yet to move up because out of 100 or so fish we caught last week only one had a bloody tail as most other were slap full of eggs. These pre-spawners are falling to numerous baits but a Sweet Beaver, Skinny Dipper and Flatt Shad have been the top producers for larger fish. A drop shot flirt or light Carolina rig will catch its share of dinks, if numbers are important to you. Focus in and around the first breakline adjacent to any spawning flats or points. I would suspect that there would be a huge wave of skinny water fish moving up in the next day or two. So if you come soon, don’t forget your polarized glasses!

This little jewel of a lake saved me on Saturday. We started out on Monticello Saturday morning with only 8 fish or so by 10:00 am. We loaded both boats up and headed over to Welsh. First cast 5 pounder, second cast 4 pounder. We ended up catching fish just about everywhere we stopped. The fish on the North end of the lake have already spawned out and fry are on every stump. The fish on the South end of the lake are still lingering around brush piles that are located on the creek channels headed into shallow water. The fish up North fell for a Skinny Dipper while a Beaver and drop shot was the ticket down south. We ended up fishing a little after dark and left these fish still biting. They probably would of bit all night. This is another great wintertime night fishing lake! If you can get out in the next 10 days, you should be able to find a huge wave of spawners on the south end.

Weather: Rain today and tomorrow with highs in the 40’s and lows in the 30’s. Partly cloudy skies all week with another chance for rain next weekend, highs all week in the 50’s and 60’s with lows in the 40’s.

Spring is just around the corner and Lake Fork is expected to be very busy. Now is the time to start booking all the accommodations you will need during this time.

It is hard to believe that Christmas is right around the corner, time flies when you’re having fun. On 21Nov07 East Texas was hit by a Northern cold front, temperatures dropped from the 70’s and 80’s to lows in the 30’s overnight. So an exact report on what has been working the last two weeks would not do anyone much good. But, what I will report is how we catch these cold weather fish on Fork year after year during this time. Many of us have been waiting for this cooler weather for several reasons. I like the cooler weather because the appetite of the bass and crappie will kick into overdrive as they feed up for the winter. It also narrows down my bait selection to only a few and the fish will really group up on the baitfish making numbers of catches good once schools are found.

Anglers visiting Lake Fork during December and January will find concentrations of Bass in two locations, very shallow (2-9 ft.) and very deep (20-40 ft). For the shallow water bite I will be throwing two styles of baits being a lipless crankbait like the Sebile Flatt shad and a shakey head like the Arkie u-bolt or jerkey head. I will team up these finesse heads with a Reaction Innovations 6.95 or 4.95 flirt. Color on the lipless bait is something you will have to experiment with day to day. I like using the yo-yo retrieve better than a burning retrieve; this seems to always catch larger fish for us. On the flirt I like the flirt I like the colors Juicy, California 420 and some others in greens and browns. I fish the head in the creeks and on the edges, dead sticking. The key here is to find grass and shad in the back of the creeks. Start at the back of a creek and work half way out, if no takers try another.

For the deep water bite we will be using four styles of baits being one of my custom spoons, drop shot (flirt), swim bait and a Flatt Shad. While fishing deep this time of year I depend greatly on my electronics. I always start out with my custom spoon on these fish. A lot of guys are casting a spoon and that is fine. But, when I have marked the fish in 20-40 ft, I like to fish vertical because I can ensure where they are and if they have moved by watching my graph. Make sure you pause and shake the spoon on the way back up to the boat just incase there are some suspended fish under the boat. Another great way to catch some lunkers deep is taking the flatt shad and fishing it vertical or horizontal off the bottom (yo-yo), like a spoon. This is the only lipless bait that I will use for this presentation because it isn’t as loud as others and doesn’t seem to spook any fish in the school, other will.

December and January offers a limited time of extraordinary wintertime fishing with daily catches in the 40’s to 50’s common. This is the time of year that this lake shines. The lake is in great shape with visibility clearing up after the algae bloom and levels rising with water from Bob Sandlin being pumped in. The big females are in a pre-spawn pattern now. We have been catching fish all over the lake to include the cold side, hot side, discharge and in between. My favorite baits to catch these bass in on topwater; baits like the Sebile splasher and a Reaction Innovations Trixie Shark will be a sure thing early, late and all day if it is cloudy. We can expect to start seeing some fish on the beds it two weeks (if the cool weather hangs around). During the day lipless baits, crankbaits, Boom Boom tubes and a drop shot is hard to beat. The lake is short of vegetation this year so the lilly pads and timber is a great place for the hawgs to be hanging out.

Weather: Today, high in the 80’s. The next 10 days are calling for a cold front coming in tonight causing the next two days to be in the 60’s. Then we should be warming back up into the 80’s by Thursday. The rest of the week should be warm with little chance of rain in the forecast.

News: Oak Ridge Marina and I are offering a seasonal winter special. You get one full day guided trip, one night at the motel at Oak Ridge and next day a half-day trip all for only $500.00. This is for one or two people and can be used for Bass fishing or Crappie fishing. Special will run from Nov. 15, 2007 until Jan. 15, 2008.

The fishing here on Lake Fork the last few weeks has been up and down. I have found a couple of baits that should get you bit. We have caught some topwater fish early using a Reaction Innovations Vixen over the grass. If you don’t get bit with the topwater, switch back and forth with a Revenge Spinnerbait in the color shad. Then we are going to a Sebile Flatt Shad after the sun comes up and burning this bait around the grass edges. This is a good tactic for most of the morning. The key here is covering lots of water until you find a group. After lunch an Arkie jerky head with a 6.95 Flirt in Sprayed Grass or Juicy has been catching numbers, not any lunkers. We have been fishing the jerky head around the back half of the creeks around big stumps along the creek channels. You might want to check out some boat docks close to deep water.

The fishing on Lake Monticello is absolutely awesome. If you don’t think you can get tired of catching bass, visit this lake with me in the next two months. This week we have averaged 40-80 bass on a full day trip. The lake is about two foot low and the water is off color, due to an algae bloom. The water temperature at the discharge is still in the mid 90’s. Here we have been using a couple of baits to include a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver, Skinny Dipper and a Boom Boom Tube. Texas or Carolina rig has not mattered they will eat both. Find your creek channel edges and fish the obvious timber that is sticking up everywhere. The Dam is also holding some good numbers.
