MT Hood Jazz Review/Marty Hughley
A good time for the roses: Marianne Mayfield took the microphone on Sunday to a warm ovation. "To say that I'm happy to be here," she began, then she stepped forward and her voice turned low and gritty, "is an understatement.
"But I'm happy to receive my roses now."
The singer-bassist played regularly in Portland through the '70s and '80s, and in the words of singer Marilyn Keller, "fostered and mothered many of us into this business." Now she's battling liver cancer. As Steen put it recently, "The doctors told her she had six months to live; that was about five months ago."
Yet she felt well enough on Sunday to not only receive a big bouquet but also to take part in her own tribute. Keller's sweet tonal clarity,
Julianne R. Johnson's remarkable range and dramatic flair,
Seattleite Woody Woodhouse's sly humor ("I don't mean to talk about your mama, but she's so good-looking," he ad-libbed in "Summertime") and Shirley Nanette's class and sass all were deployed in Mayfield's honor. She sang a poignant ballad, occasionally dabbing at tears, then joined the others in a spirited, sometimes borderline-bawdy blues.
Seldom is a set of music both so touching and so fun.
Marrianne passed away in 2004. Glad we could give her roses while she could appreciate it. She will be missed. Julianne
REVIEW#2
"Julianne's voice punches through on many radio and TV ads both regionally and nationally. Johnson also has performed in several movies and was a regular on Fox TV's Medicine Ball. She has also teamed up with Michael Harrison of late, recording a CD of jazz standards and torch songs released the fall of 2000, Cheek To Cheek."
