The American Kennel Club, the world's largest purebred canine registry, recently announced the creation of a new program for these wonderful animals, many of which have been adopted from animal shelters and city pounds.
As of Oct. 1, owners of mixed-breed dogs and hybrids, such as labradoodles, can begin enrolling their four-footed friends and receive an AKC identification number. Beginning April 1, 2010, enrolled dogs will be eligible to compete in mixed-breed classes at stand-alone AKC agility, obedience and rally events. These competitions will not be part of regular AKC licensed events held for purebred dogs.
Other benefits include discounted participation in the AKC Companion Animal Recovery Lost and Found service, a free AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate for dogs passing the CGC test, a free initial veterinary visit, a trial offer for pet insurance and numerous discount coupons for pet supplies.
The third phase of the new program will offer a dedicated Web site where dog owners can interact via an online community with discussion forums, and access dog care video downloads, advice from experts and the most up-to-date news on canine health and welfare. The site will continually be enhanced with new features and benefits in order to respond to the changing needs of pet owners.
The AKC hopes that the new program will not only improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of mixed-breed dogs, but will also help local kennel clubs to attract new members and educate more dog owners. The new development will allow the organization to broaden its legislative influence at all levels of government by representing more dog owners and will further promote responsible dog ownership.
Gail Zurawski, obedience coordinator for the Wampanoag Kennel Club in New Bedford, says she believes separate competitions for mixed breeds are a good idea. She adds that these dogs have always been welcomed in obedience classes offered by the club.
"We have quite a few that come for training," she begins, adding that owners are more likely to relinquish to a shelter a mixed breed that constantly misbehaves than they would a purebred canine that cost a lot of money.
Zurawski has seen many unusual crosses during the 15 years that she has served as obedience coordinator, including a "boogle" — a beagle-boxer mix that recently completed a basic obedience class.
The kennel club offers obedience instruction from beginning to advanced classes on Wednesday nights at the Portuguese-American Veterans Hall on Jenkins Street in New Bedford.
Zurawski owned several mixed -breed dogs before purchasing a cocker spaniel many years ago. Several of her dogs have earned obedience degrees and Canine Good Citizen titles and regularly visit local nursing homes.
She hopes that more owners of mixed breed dogs will participate in the new AKC program and become involved in the sport of dogs. Zurawski emphasizes that the activities that will be offered for mixed breed dogs are ideal for families, and teach children about good sportsmanship and responsibility.
